buoy Empress of Ireland

la bouée sonne
dans la brume où leur navire
a coulé à fond

Richard Vallance

This haiku refers to the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence on May 29 1914, when 1,012 on board died. While the sinking took place in the spring, this haiku is set in the autumn when it is colder and mist is clammy. The buoy is there all the time, season in and season out.

As it so happens, last evening, May 4, while my boyfriend, Louis-Dominique and I were on the way to see the mind-blowing concert by Leela Gilday at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa, a woman shouted out, I LOVE THAT MAN’S TIE!... to which I of course replied, SO DO I!

Richard Vallance

And here is the link to her fantastic site, Leela Gilday, K’eintah Natse Ju:

https://www.leelagilday.com/

By some fabulous and bizarre co-incidence, her middle name Natse is almost identical to the Japanese word, Natsu, which means summer!

I have just changed the name of my kitty from Petunia to Fleur-de-Lys, because the flower is so lovely, and the name so sonorous.

Richard Vallance

This actually just happened to me! I was walking back home yesterday on a forested path when I encountered a skunk happily nibbling on bread crumbs. Fortunately he was facing away from me, his cute fluffy tail riding high!
